UCM staff members attend a monthly meeting to catch up and celebrate. Each other, that is. There is time set aside at every meeting to recognize work anniversaries and birthdays, where each person receives a plaque or a poster or both, if your work anniversary coincides with your birth month. This month signaled a new birthday tradition, a spin-off of a well-known birthday party game we called, “Pin the Tail on the Bobcat.” In a little bit of online research, I discovered that the donkey version of this game had some interesting beginnings (to say the least). I also noticed other spin-offs that involve bunnies, mermaids, unicorns, and dinosaurs, but to my knowledge, UCM’s bobcat version is the first of its kind.
Taking time to acknowledge each other, share a laugh and a moment of fun is one of the ways UCM demonstrates one of the key factors of a cohesive team. We enjoy being around each other. Results from a department climate survey compared results of 10 factors in 2016 to the same factors tested during a 2013 benchmark. There were notable increases in all areas, including a 41% increase or 94% of the team saying we know how to have fun together. I’m proud of the caliber of work UCM produces and equally proud of the fact that we don’t miss the moments that matter.
