When I toured the Athens Campus over the summer to count the cupolas, I was surprised about something I did not see. Our iconic Bobcat weather vane was missing from Wray House. After inquiring about its whereabouts and discovering it had been damaged in a storm, I became concerned about the replacement. Would it look like the original? Would it be able to hold up under the pressure of future inclement weather? After receiving confirmation of its donning and a few facts about it, I was reassured that the Bobcat is safe.
Members of Ohio University’s sheet metal shop created a replica of the Bobcat weather vane, which was fashioned after drawings provided by Residence Life. The new Bobcat was affixed to a true weather vane, which is an upgrade to the previous facsimile. According to Facilities Management and Safety, because the new weather vane will move according to the direction of the wind, it will be better equipped to stand up against strong wind gusts.
Another unexpected surprise was to discover that another, smaller Bobcat weather vane has been developed for the top of Ping Cottage, which I highlighted when its new cupola was installed. The second Bobcat will rise before the end of Homecoming Week.
