Even as a adult, I get that I-can’t-contain-myself feeling I did as a kid when I knew something great was about to happen. Whether it’s the night before Christmas; the moment before I open a gift; or when I see my dog running for his toy to invite me to a game of fetch for the millionth time; it never gets old.
Something happens physiologically in your brain when you have positive expectations. In an article entitled,”How happy happens in your brain,” blogger and author Debbie Hampton writes about the power of the brain and what happens when you have what I call child-like hope.
“The anticipation of the reward is actually what triggers a dopamine good feeling in your brain causing it to release the energy you need to move towards the rewards,” she says in her blog, The Best Brain Possible.
Last night I had that same feeling. I knew something good was about to happen. And I’m happy to say that after my anticipation about the Faculty Newsmakers Gala, I was thoroughly fulfilled. Though UCM staff spent many days and nights pouring over the big picture as well as all of the minutiae that goes into event planning, experiencing the genuine appreciation, enjoyment, and surprise on so many faculty members’ faces upon discovering that the evening was all about them made the planning worthwhile.
Regardless of how many quotes a particular newsmaker garnered in the previous year, every single one counts and they all make a difference. This is what I told many of the guests I met last night. The relationship in which we are engaged is symbiotic–if faculty aren’t doing what they do–making a difference in their classrooms and labs everyday and shaping creative, scientific, and civic dialogue outside their classrooms, our team couldn’t do what we do.
Whether pitching news bits to the media, contributing to the University’s historical record through photography and video, putting a thousand words into stories coupled with images designed to help recruit and retain students and employees, everyday UCM is working to promote OHIO.
I’m so grateful to be able to experience child-like anticipation of something good every day. I can do this because I know there’s a fantastically talented team around me that’s making it happen.
At the end of the Faculty Newsmakers Gala, we toasted all of the educators in our classrooms who made news in 2016. They represented 10 academic units and the Center for International Studies as well as 5 regional campuses.
Their reach spanned the entire country and even around the globe.
All in all, during 2016, 381 OHIO faculty helped shape last year’s news through 4,065 stories in 381 news outlets. And UCM continued to be the amazing team it is. I salute them again today and everyday.
